What is DDoS (Distributed Denial of Services)?

A cyber attack that is conducted by continually overwhelming a target web service with more internet traffic than the service was designed to handle. This traffic usually comes in from multiple infected/malicious machines working together in a botnet and renders the service unavailable for as long as the attacker choses to keep the botnet targeted on that service.
