Three Takeaways from the Billington CyberSecurity Summit

Last week, the Billington CyberSecurity Summit brought together top industry and government leaders to discuss the rising trends and challenges of the current cybersecurity landscape. Virsec was a proud sponsor of the virtual event and happy to be part of the conversation. Thomas K. Billington, CEO and Founder of Billington Security, kicked off the event before transitioning to DHS Secretary, Alejandro Mayorkas. Opening keynotes and breakout sessions covered a variety of cyber topics like Zero Trust, Ransomware, Transition to 5G, and many more.

As part of the agenda, Ray DeMeo, Co-founder and SVP of Strategic Partnerships at Virsec, joined the Zero Trust and the Cloud panel session to discuss the importance of workload protection and actively making sure there is zero dwell time for attackers.

A few key takeaways from the discussions:

  • Cybersecurity continues to be one of our nation’s greatest challenges. During the pandemic, the importance of the Internet and rise of digital services became critical to keeping citizens connected. Combating cyber attacks continues to be a daily job. As Secretary Mayorkas said, "Cybersecurity is now a central piece of our geopolitics, shaping our future online and offline.”

  • Zero Trust is not one thing, but a strategy, processes, multiple layers. There is no one size fits all or singular product to purchase in order to achieve it. The core goal of Zero Trust is to protect your data, and data is not all the same. Some data needs better protection than others and it is critical to protect what is most important. The Executive Order from the Biden Administration continues to drive agencies to innovate and implement a Zero Trust strategy in order to keep our nation’s data and systems safe.

  • Emerging and disruptive technology is on the rise. Neal Ziring, Technical Director at NSA, said that disruptive technology can be described as one that is going to cause a major shift either within government or across the public and private sector, across multiple verticals. He went on to say that these [disruptive technologies] are going to create more responsibilities for industry and government. With the timeline to innovate consistently increasing, technology is being delivered at a faster pace more than ever before.

Cybersecurity continues to be top of mind for everyone in the private and public sectors. With sophisticated, high-profile cyberattacks becoming the norm and our adversaries becoming craftier than ever, we must continue to move the needle and innovate at a fast pace.

This requires a fundamental paradigm shift where we focus on cybersecurity from the inside and approach protecting software differently. This requires fully understanding your software in order to fully protect it. Virsec Security Platform takes a deterministic approach to protect software, locking out the attacker before they can execute their malicious intent. For more information on how we are approaching cybersecurity differently to meet the mission needs of the public sector, join our upcoming discussion.
